East AfriCare Medium Clinic

On the campus of the Makanisa School for the Deaf, a new “Medium” Clinic was established in August of 2022. A “Medium” Clinic in that setting is like our Urgent Care Clinics. Medical care in Ethiopia is scarce and the few clinics and hospitals that are in the country are very expensive.

This Clinic was established to serve students and staff of the deaf school as well as those seeking care from the surrounding community. It is structured to provide much more affordable care than is available elsewhere. At present costs are about 70% less than those charged in most other “Medium” Clinics in the city. Additionally, those who have no ability to pay are provided care at no cost.

Such a fee structure implies the need for help with capital costs for the clinic and some operating cost supplements. The clinic presently has 8 staff including 1 Doctor, 1 Health Officer (like our PA or APRN), 2 Nurses, 2 Lab Technicians, 1 Receptionist, and a Clinic Manager. If further capital funds become available, Radiology (X-ray) services may also be provided.

Since opening in August of 2022, the clinic has provided care for well over 8,000 patients. Close to 1/3 (2,410) were provided free care. East AfriCare would like to be able to provide further funds for both capital improvements to expand services, and additional operating funds to serve more of the surrounding community.
