Our Vision

Who we are

We are amongst many in our world who strive to do good. We are trying to make a difference in the lives of the underprivileged and less fortunate to effect change that sustains through generations.

Why we do this

We believe in every human heart there is generosity and love which compels us to do good and be kind to humanity, to make the world a happier and better place to live.

What we do

We provide education to deaf children; we give medical care; and we drill wells to provide clean water.

Often, the greatest challenges represent the greatest opportunities for success. Deaf Education lays an amazing foundation for success in children who, without such education, have been and would be severely challenged and limited in their ability to function in society. Historically, Deaf Education has had a long and storied past. The overview of the subject on the following website is very helpful and quite intriguing: https://deafchildren.org/wpcontent/uploads/2014/03/history_of_deaf_education_.pdf. Virtually every Deaf Education effort around the world has its own story and is worthy of support.

East AfriCare supports Deaf Education in Ethiopia through the work of the Makanisa School for the Deaf in Addis Ababa. It has 4 additional Satellite Schools in Ethiopia. Altogether, these 5 schools train 850 students each year. None of the students or their families are charged tuition and are provided with uniforms, school supplies and some meals. They come from multiple tribal groups as well as diverse secular and religious backgrounds including Ethiopian Orthodox, various Protestant and Muslim communities.

Working with these children has emphasized other needs they have such as Health Care and Clean Water. The Addis Ababa campus has a clinic that is available to the students and staff of the Deaf School and to the community at large. Those that cannot afford care are served at no charge. The community is offered care at costs that are significantly less than the norm in that community.

In the year 2002 a water well drilling program was initiated in the Southern Region of Ethiopia (now separated into various political/geographic entities). At present, that effort has resulted in over 700 wells with hand pumps. Those wells have been drilled using a 1960’s era Schramm drilling rig which has required increasing amounts of maintenance. This past year a new rig was imported from India and drilling is just beginning with the new rig. The first 2 wells drilled with this new rig were on the campus of the Makanisa Deaf School in Addis Ababa. These wells will provide a constant supply of good water for the students there. It will also be used on a new 60 well project in the Sidama region of Southern Ethiopia. The 60 well agreement was signed with the Sidama Region Water Bureau in early December of 2023.
